HardWare Notes:
This version takes advantage of the faster speeds of the PowerPC¬ microprocessors sold by Apple and competing vendors in their computers. If your computer uses the earlier 68020, 68030, or 68040 processors, this program is not for you. Please call us and we will send you a demo of version 2.85, which although it doesn╒t have all the features of this version, would still permit you to capture, display and use your family╒s data. And in the future, when you upgrade your computer to a PowerPC¬ based unit, you will be able to automatically migrate your information from the earlier to the current release. While the program will work with PowerPC¬ processors with speeds as low as 66 to 100 MHz, HeartWood¬ may appear slow, especially as you view/ add color pictures to the program.
Begin exploring:
If you did not obtain a copy of the Demo version of HeartWood¬, you will need to enter a couple of families yourself, in order to begin to see all the features in the software. (If you already have family information in a GEDCOM file format , which is a common file type used by many genealogy programs, you can easily Import the information on the Toolbox page which is described below.)
Take a few minutes to reflect upon and identify these families. As a suggestion: if you know your great-grandparents, grandparents and your own parents, this would be enough to create sufficient information for the program. (It is not necessary to have all the members of any of these families, as you can always enter additional members at any time. ) You are just looking for sufficient people to take advantage of the Create-a-Family feature on the ToolBox card that creates many records quickly. The program itself contains all the instructions necessary to use all the features of HeartWood. The following steps are meant as only a VERY BRIEF introduction to some of the more unique features of HeartWood. You will create a few relatives, view a person's card, view the Ancestors card and Family-Go-Round cards and finally end on the Map of HeartWood where you can see all the respective pieces of the program.
(Keep two points in mind: 1) depressing the AppleKey (≡) and Spacebar will always display the Menubar and from this menubar you can always select Help or the Map of HeartWood¬ under the HeartWood¬ Menu for additional information on the program; 2) that most buttons will describe their own behavior if you have the OptionKey depressed as you move your mouse over them.)
To begin, doubleclick the HeartWood¬ program icon and it will start. If your sound system is enabled, a short introduction of music will be heard as you are taken to the introductory woodland scene. Click anywhere on the screen or hit the EnterKey and the registration information will be displayed. If you Click on the OK button, you will be taken to the Overview page for a family. On it you will see a Tree of last names and a timeline graphic with years of birth displayed.
Ñ Click on the Toobox Icon at the bottom of the card; it will take you to the Toolbox card. This is the primary place for entering information, adding pictures, importing/ exporting, etc. You will see a number of Icons/ buttons.
Ñ Click on the upper left Icon (the Man planting a tree); it will take you to the Create a Family card. This is the place for creating lots of people quickly.
Ñ Click anywhere in the Father or Mother fields. Following the suggestion above, you would enter your great-grandparents full names into these fields. (Remember, in genealogy, maiden names are often used.) Hit the Tabkey to progress to the next fields of Sons and Daughters (one of these would be one of your grandparents) . If you have more than one son or daughter to enter , hit the Enterkey to separate each name. (If the names are very long and they 'wrap' to another line, don't worry as hitting the Enterkey keeps the names separate.)
When you have finished entering all the names for this family, Click on the Create button at the bottom of the card. Cards/records will be created for all these individuals with proper 'linkages'. HeartWood will return with a message confirming that it has created the right number and will erase the information in all the fields, so you can continue entering. Remember , since you have now entered a name for one of your grandparents, they would be a Father or Mother to the next generation (your parents).
For this reason, you would Click on the small button on the right of the Father (or Mother) field that says "get existing Father". HeartWood will display a window asking for the person to use. Enter part or all of the name of the correct person whom you just created as a son or daughter to your great-grandparents. The program will search for the appropriate card and take you to it. When you have confirmed it is the right individual with the Yes button, the program will return you to this Create a Family card and the person's name will be entered into the proper field (Mother or Father). If you made a mistake, remember the Erase All button on the bottom will reset the card fields. Tab into the proper spouse field or sons/daughters ( one of your parents) fields and continue entering names like you did before. When you have finished entering the names, again Click on the Create button at the bottom and the cards and linkages will be created. Repeat this now for your own immediate family. Remember, you've just created a record for one of your parents. You have now created cards spanning 3 generations (or more if you so desired.)
Ñ Click on the Done button at the bottom of the card. You will be returned to the Toolbox page.
Ñ Click on the Overview button next to the 'Stop' sign at the bottom of the card. You will be returned to the Overview card you saw before. (If the menubar is not visible, make it appear by depressing the AppleKey (≡) and Spacebar.) Choose Find Phrase... under the HeartWood¬ menu. Enter your name or someone from the most recent generation you just added and Click OK. The program should take you to that person's card. You will be looking at the main building block of any family, an individual. (You can move the mouse around on the card and see the "live button" objects that when clicked will do something. But don't click them just yet!)
Ñ Click & hold the HeartWood Menu and select the Ancestors menuitem. You should hear some music and be taken to the Ancestors card. Displayed in front of you should be the graphical representation of your parents, grandparents, and great-grandparents. If you click on any of the displayed icons of men & women, the names of the individuals will be displayed. Double-click on the name of one of your grandparents. You will be taken to that person's individual card.
Ñ Click & hold the HeartWood menu and select the Family-Go-Round menuitem. You should hear some music and be taken to the unique Family-Go-Round card. Displayed in front of you should be a few "discs" linked together and suspended in space. If you move your mouse over the small buttons on the edge of the discs, a person's name will appear in a message bar. In the upper left hand corner will be your great-grandparent; linked to a disc with buttons representing his/her children (one of whom is your grandparent). This button in turn is linked to another disc representing your grandparents family, which in turn is linked to another disc representing your parents immediate family, (including You?). Down the left hand side of the screen are directional buttons (left and right facing arrows) that will "spin" the discs at the same "level" as the buttons themselves. (Some people like to think of this view as similar to a music CD player rotating through its selections. With many children, you could have many disks that will rotate into and out of view.) As you move your mouse over one of the buttons on the edge of a disc, click once on the icon and you will be taken to that person's card.
Ñ Click & hold the HeartWood menu and select the Map of HeartWood¬ menuitem. You will hear some music and be taken to the Map of HeartWood page. You will see outlined miniature pictures of all the cards used in HeartWood and their relationship to each other. If you click on any of these pictures, you will be taken to the card and a brief description will be displayed. When you click on the OK button, the description will disappear. When you click again on the screen, you will be returned to the Map.
You have now created some of your own family cards. You have viewed an individual's card and you have seen a brief example of the Ancestors and Family-Go-Round cards. And finally, you have seen the Map of HeartWood¬ page to which you can always return to understand how all the parts work within the program.
At this time, you can begin to add some more information for the people you have entered (e.g., date of birth). Go to the Toolbox page and explore the "watering can". You could scan some pictures of your family and attach them to an individual's card (e.g., portrait). Go to the Toolbox page and explore the "seed packets" . You could print out various standard genealogy reports (e.g., pedigree chart) and much more.
